Michael's Notes

Though our physical bookstore will remain closed until the new year, we continue to process orders as usual. Please contact us with any questions.

Greetings everyone,

Fall is always a popular season for books. We stock up on the newest titles that pique our interests and finally immerse ourselves into that large yet comforting stack of TBRs we've intended to tackle for months. For whatever reason, autumn brings with it a desire to read--and in that spirit, we'd like to feature some recommendations from members of our bookstore and publications staff.

"If I Can Cook/You Know God Can: African American Food Memories, Meditations, and Recipes, by Ntozake Shange, is a beautiful book that is part memoir, part cookbook. I love how Shange relates food to memory as it keeps culture and tradition alive within the African Diaspora in North, Central, and South America and the Caribbean."

"The Pocket Change Collective is an accessible series of books by activists and artists about issues and ideas important to today's youth, written directly for them."

"I would describe Listening Against the Stone as spiritual creative memoir. Deeply introspective and spiritual, yet universal and intensely relatable, these essays by Brenda Miller are about longing and doubting and questioning and stretching her soul. The sentences, images, and sensory invocations are so beautiful that I found myself falling into a peaceful, meditative state while I was supposed to be editing!"

"The Stonewall Generation--a 2020 Nautilus Award Winner in the Social Change and Social Justice category--is a moving and vivid account of the Stonewall era, featuring interviews with prominent LGBT activists like Miss Major and Lani Ka'ahumanu. I loved learning about our shared history through this book."

As you build your fall book nest, be sure to also browse the categories listed in the left margin of this page, such as our Skinner House Books and Beacon Press inventories. And remember that our knowledgeable bookstore staff are here to help you find what you're looking for.
