Michael's Notes

Although our physical bookstore remains closed to the public, we continue to process orders as usual. We look forward to reopening our physical space this fall.

Summer staff hours are M-F, 9-4 ET and run from now through Labor Day.

Hi folks,

You are correct. It's happening. We are indeed into the final days of summer 2021, with fall about 5 minutes down the road. It's hard to believe and, like most of you, I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand, time helps us transcend the challenges and trauma we face, making us--we hope--into a better society, better versions of ourselves. On the other hand, the passage of time is anxiety-producing for many reasons.

Time also brings new expressions in writing. The latest books in our collection offer new opportunities to gain empathy, become more knowledgeable about the world, expand our circles of inclusivity . . . to share our happiness and grief. Our new inSpirit volume--Shelter in This Place: Meditations on 2020 from editor Meg Riley--is the August pick for Justice and Spirit: The Unitarian Universalist Book Club on Goodreads. Other brand-new Skinner House titles include Faith on Trial: Religion and the Law in the United States by Mark Caggiano, The Through Line: 200 Years of the Berry Street Essay from editor Kate Walker, and Kristen Harper's The Darkness Divine: A Loving Challenge to My Faith.

Anticipated new titles from Beacon Press include Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz's Not a Nation of Immigrants: Settler Colonialism, White Supremacy, and a History of Erasure and Exclusion, Ratchetdemic: Reimagining Academic Success by Christopher Emdin, Palmares: A Novel by Gayl Jones, and Kyle Mays' An Afro-Indigenous History of the United States. These books are all available for order or pre-order now.

Please know that your inSpirit bookstore purchases go to support the important work of Skinner House Books, Beacon Press, and all ministries and programs of the UUA. As always, we hope you'll contact us with questions and suggestions.
