Skinner House Books is an imprint of the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations.

The Skinner House Editorial Board

The Skinner House Editorial Board advises on the publishing direction of Skinner House Books, an imprint of the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations. The Board’s purpose is to publish works that enrich the spiritual and religious lives of Unitarian Universalists and others who share the values of liberal religion. Skinner House publishes titles on Unitarian Universalist faith, history, and beliefs--including historical documents central to the Unitarian and Universalist traditions. The Skinner House Board, comprised of UUA staff and non-staff, meets approximately six times a year at UUA headquarters in Boston, Massachusetts.

Submission Guidelines

Skinner House Books does not review unsolicited manuscripts. In most cases, the best way to tell us about a book idea is to submit a proposal. A proposal to Skinner House should include (1) a cover letter stating why the author is qualified to write such a work and why the manuscript is appropriate for the Skinner House audience, (2) a 2-10 page outline or summary of the work, (3) a table of contents (3) an introduction, and (4) one or two sample chapters.

Queries
For books that would feature multiple contributors or require significant research, you may choose to submit a query to gauge our interest before submitting a full proposal. A query is 1-3 pages long. It includes a concise summary of the proposed work, an explanation of why the author is qualified to write on the proposed topic, and a statement saying why the work is appropriate for the Skinner House audience.

Due to the large number of submissions we receive, Skinner House is unable to comment in detail on proposals or queries that are declined.

Current Topics of Interest

Skinner House Books is currently seeking proposals on these topics: how to nurture tolerance in our children; how to talk to children about spiritual subjects; spirituality in the workplace; spirituality and/or spiritual practice in everyday life; social action as a spiritual practice; aging and spirituality; young adulthood and spirituality; prayer collections; how to become a social justice activist; nature and spirituality; interconnectedness; living the values consistent with our "small planet"; collected stories for children; cultural appropriation vs. cultural diversity: how to strike a balance; worship resources; true stories about congregational life that focus on a particular theme, such as welcoming blended families, nurturing diversity, nurturing social activism, managing grief, managing conflict, nurturing intergenerational communication.

  • The title and author of the Skinner House publication
  • The excerpt you want to use (please provide page numbers)
  • Intended use of the duplicated material
  • The number of copies you intend to make (the print run of your publication if you are republishing the material)
  • Whether you intend to sell a product containing material from a Skinner House publication, and if so, whether you intend to make a profit or just recoup expenses
  • The title, author, and publisher of the work in which the Skinner House material will appear, if applicable
